The Spruce Creek Fly-In Community

A unique community in the heart of Volusia County

Spruce Creek Fly-In is the world’s most premier and the largest private airport in the U.S. It boasts a 4,000 ft. lighted runway and a GPS approach at the center of the community, which can accommodate single engine props and small jets.

During World War 11 it was a Naval Airfield but now provides facilities for over 4500 residents, approximately 1300 homes and over 600 hangars. 

Spruce Creek was the dream of investors assembled by McKinley Conway, who promoted several fly-in communities because they envisioned people being able to taxi their airplanes from home to the office door.   In 1960 the investors purchased the Old Samsula Airfield, near Daytona Beach, and incorporated their company called “Fly-In Concept”.  Though the investors had visions of grandeur for this property, the economic climate was dour and by the mid 1970’s the “ Fly-In” investors declared bankruptcy.

Thompson Properties of Florida led by Jay Thompson acquired the 1400 acre Spruce Creek Airport and continued Conway’s idea of an attractive site with residential and commercial dwellings, hangar homes and exclusive country club.  Spruce Creek Country Club has an 18-hole championship golf course, clubhouse with pool, restaurant, banquet facilities, tennis court, and the “works”.  The airport has the very fine Downwind’s  Restaurant” which allows pilots to taxi in for lunch or dinner, refuel and relax in friendly surroundings. This restaurant is open to the public.  

Spruce Creek Fly-In is a 24-hour man-gated community and is one of the most active areas anywhere and attracts not only airplane devotees but also bikers and racecar drivers.  The entrance sign, CAUTION CHILDREN AND ADULTS AT PLAY, is so true in the Fly-In.  In addition, there are numerous clubs and functions throughout the year to please the children and adults alike. It is perhaps one of the friendliest places one could live and enjoy the marvelous Florida Lifestyle.
